PAT Testing Bristol - EMC Electrical Group

Whilst Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is not a legal requirement in the United Kingdom, EMC Electrical Group would recommend it to ensure you comply with the following:

  • Electricity at Work Act 1989
  • Health and Safety Act 1974
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations 1998
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations1999

These are put in place to keep your Bristol business safe in that all your electrical equipment is maintained and in good condition.

What’s Involved in PAT Testing?

PAT Testing Bristol comprises of a visual inspection and internal fault testing. These examine the insulation, earthing continuity and contact with exposed metal. If the appliance fails the testing it needs to be repaired or replaced. If it passes it is safe to continue using.

How to prove it’s been carried out?

After EMC Electrical Group has finished PAT Testing for you, you will receive a report. This includes a detailed checklist of the appliances including their type, name, location and description. It will also detail the test results for each item, and failed items with reasoning for the same. A pass or fail label  will be attached to each appliance which will include the inspection date, when they are next due to be tested and the signature of our inspector. Failure to comply can even result in hefty fines and penalties which can so easily be avoided.

How often does PAT Testing need to be done?

EMC Electrical Group we would advise business owners to stay up to date with the latest industry regulations and relevant laws but as a general rule of thumb the current recommendation is annually (every 12 months). However if the appliance has undergone any notable changes since it was last tested then this ought to be brought forward. The same goes for frequently moving appliances, we would recommend these be tested monthly. This can help reduce the risk of electrical shocks and even fires. Worth mentioning to whoever provides the insurance for your Bristol premises also as there may be the potential for a depletion in your premium for the reduction in risk of potential hazards!

What will be tested?

EMC Electrical Group will test all mobile/ portable appliances at your Bristol premises as part of their PAT Testing routine. As a loose guideline or definition to this it would be anything that has a flexible cable or wire to connect it to a power supply.
