In addition to allowing a safe escape Emergency Lighting must suitably illuminate and pinpoint all fire safety and firefighting equipment in the building.
Emergency Lighting Inspection Requirements
It is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom for both Building Regulations and Fire Safety that all business premises in Bristol provide Emergency Lighting and therefore it is essential that this system is regularly maintained and tested ensuring it will work without hesitation!
There are two types of Emergency Lighting Inspections the first being a visual inspection (which can be carried out by an on-site competent person, although we are also happy to do) the second is a duration test which would most certainly require our attendance. We will shortly go into more detail about both of these, but EMC Electrical Group recommend the visual inspection to be carried out monthly and the duration test at least once a year.
If a fault is pinpointed during your monthly testing and if carried out internally please do not consider trying to carry out a DIY fix. These systems can be complex, and you should call EMC Electrical Group in order to resolve the issue.
Emergency Lighting Inspections
As briefly mentioned there are two types of Emergency Lighting Inspections being the visual and duration. EMC Electrical Group will now delve a little deeper into both to help gain a basic understanding of what’s involved.
So as the well-known TV advert states the visual inspection “does what it says on the tin!” a companion if we may to the duration test, the visual inspection allows for any faults to easily be identified by simply looking at the system once activated. Things to note will be timers, brightness, lights not illuminating or charging etc and then obviously taking remedial action if things are not all in good working order.
The duration test must ensure that the Emergency Lighting must operate for a sufficient amount of time to allow those in the Bristol premises to exit safely. Furthermore it must stay illuminated allowing the emergency services to enter the building following evacuation. Often businesses request Emergency Lighting Inspections to be carried out, outside of their Bristol business hours to allow the system to fully recharge overnight whilst the building is unoccupied. Others prefer an early morning inspection so that they have the daylight hours ahead in the event of an emergency. We will endeavour to meet your needs the best we can. This 3-hour test that EMC Electrical Group can carry out on your behalf will entail the primary lighting circuit to you premises being switched off and of course any remedial actions taken to ensure the system is fully up and running as intended.
